The 2010 Ford Mustang looks leaner, although it actually gains a few pounds. It looks lower, although it's not. With headlights trimmed in black chrome (at least on the GT model) and a squatter, all-black grille, the look is sinister. Even the pony mounted to the center of the grille is finished in black chrome.

Ford Verve Sedan
Just as Mazda is exhibiting a sedan version of the 2 at Auto Guangzhou, the automaker's parent company, Ford, is revealing a sedan version of the Verve concept. The second in a series of concepts that will culminate with yet another variant set to be unveiled in Detroit, this 'notchback' provides further insight to the future small car design direction for Ford.Ford's European design team, which created the Verve concepts, applied Ford's kinetic design philosophy and bu
ilt on the look of its hatchback sibling. It shares the three-door's front-end graphics and signature form language, composed of dynamic lines and full surfaces, and displays a pillarless side window profile along with strongly defined wheel arches. The Verve Sedan's C-pillar shape adds to the feeling of dynamism, while the rear body and decklid shapes continue the kinetic design look with full surfaces and bold lines. The rear glass of the notchback is shaped to correspond with the forms of the high-mounted, two-piece tail lamps. This execution, first seen on the new Mondeo, is now translated into a smaller car."First it was the hatchback and now a very exciting and dynamic notchback," said Martin Smith, Ford's Executive Director of European Design. "Looking at these concepts together, you can just imagine how exciting the successor to the Ford Fiesta will be when it hits the market."

Ford Kuga
A new crossover wearing the Ford badge will be revealed at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Called the Kuga, the vehicle draws heavily on the Iosis X concept car presented at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. "We recognised that image-conscious customers for this kind of vehicle want a very individual car in which impressive on-road capability blends seamlessly with substantial off-road ability," said Martin Smith, Executive Design Director for Ford of Europe.
The Kuga was designed using Ford's 'kinetic design' form language, with the compact 4x4 crossover scheduled to be added to the Ford of Europe portfolio in early 2008.

Ford F-150
The F-150 is Ford’s full-size, half-ton pickup. F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America for 30 straight years. The F-150 was the first truck to feature a standard fourth door on all SuperCab trims and the redesigned 2004 F-150 was the first truck to offer rear-hinged access panels on Regular Cab trims to access behind-seat storage.
Stiffer CompetitionFord thus couldn't afford to make mistakes with this full-size pickup. It faces stiffer foreign competition from Toyota and Nissan, not to mention high-volume competitors from Chevrolet, GMC and Dodge.
The 2004 F-Series initially arrives with the popular F-150 designation. It's roomier, longer and wider, besides being built more solidly. (Heavier-duty, lower-volume versions arrive later.)
Styling is more aggressive because some critics felt the old look was too "soft" for a rugged truck. There are muscular contours and exaggerated features, which even include an oversized blue Ford oval insignia.
Many ImprovementsThere also are added power, crisper steering, sharper handling, an improved ride and larger brakes.
The new F-150 costs more to build than its predecessor. Prices for the 2004 model range from $21,215 to $35,570. Comparably priced 2003 models went from $20,970 to $34,935.
(Some versions of the 2003 F-150 continue unchanged as the F-150 Heritage through the 2004 model year with pricing starting at $19,125.)
Various Trim LevelsThe new F-150 comes with rear- or 4-wheel drive with low-range gearing. Returning are regular-, extended- and crew-cab body styles with three larger bed lengths. All cabs now have four doors because more pickups are being used as family vehicles. Upgraded interior designs thus are more car-like.
The regular cab and SuperCab have standard rear-hinged "half doors," while the SuperCrew crew cab returns with four front-hinged doors, which are a lot more convenient.
New V8I tested the $34,185 SuperCrew 4-wheel-drive version. This is the roomiest new F-150, with space for five tall adults. It was powered by the F-Series' new 5.4-liter 300-horsepower V8. An improved 4.6-liter 231-horsepower V8 is available, but don't count on it for strong acceleration.
Neither engine will get a fuel economy prize, but they work with a responsive 4-speed automatic transmission.
The 300-horsepower V8 delivers strong acceleration to 65 mph, but provides average 65-75 mph passing times. That shouldn't be surprising because the SuperCrew is large and heavy, with a 139-inch-wheelbase. It's awkward to park and often impossible to put in an average-size garage. Those with barns are ahead of the game here.
However, an increasing number of people prefer huge, roomy pickups.
A strategic option is the $245 reverse sensing system. It warns of unseen objects behind the truck.
Car-like MannersThe steering provides good road feel. It's geared right—not too fast or too slow for a high, heavy vehicle. Handling is car-like, and the brake pedal has a reassuring feel.
The firm ride is composed on decently paved roads, but the back end hops on bumpy surfaces with an empty pickup bed.
My nicely painted test SuperCrew didn't have many options, but could have done without the $300 black tubular running boards. They look good, but are too narrow to be of much use when getting in this high truck, a maneuver that requires extra effort.
Large outside door handles can be easily grasped, as can the inside handles. Also, substantial front grab handles can make it easier to climb aboard.
Interiors EmphasizedFord is emphasizing the five new F-150 interiors, which are intended to enhance differences between various versions of this truck.
My test truck had a sporty "FX4" interior with "warm steel" (like aluminum) accents on the instrument panel, console, doors and steering wheel. The instrument cluster was aircraft-inspired and the dashboard had carefully positioned chrome-ringed vents. The shifter look as if from a sporty car.
The $595 front "captain's chairs" were firm, but supportive. They had "sporty cloth" and also are offered with "sporty leather."

Hot Rods, Part 3

A custom car is a phrase that became prominent in American pop culture in the 1950s, and has enjoyed special interest popularity since that time. It relates to a passenger vehicle that has been modified to improve its performance by altering or replacing the engine and transmission and to make it look "unique", unlike any car that might have been factory finished, always a personal "styling" statement by the re-styler/re-builder.
A development of hot rodding, the change in name corresponded to the change in the design of the cars that were being modified. The first hot rods were made from pre-WWII cars that had running boards and simple fenders that bent over the wheels. These were modified by removing the running boards and either removing the fenders entirely or replacing them with very light "cycle fenders". The purpose was to put the most powerful engine in the lightest possible frame and body combination. The suspension was usually altered to make the car lower; the front was often made much lower than the rear. Much later some hot rods and custom cars swapped the old solid rear axle for an independent rear axle, often from Jaguar. Only rarely was the grille of one make of car replaced by another; one exception was that the 1937 Buick grille was often put on a Ford. The original hot rods were plainly painted like the Model A Fords from which they had been built up, and only slowly begun to take on colors, and eventually fancy orange-yellow flamed hoods or "candy-like" deep arcylic finishes in the various colors.
With the change in automobile design to encase the wheels in fenders and to extend the hood to the full width of the car, the former practices were no longer possible. In addition, there was tremendous automotive advertising and subsequent public interest in the new models in the 1950s. Hence custom cars came into existence, swapping headlight rings, grilles, bumpers, chrome side strips, and tail lights. The bodies of the cars were changed by cutting through the sheet metal, removing bits to make the car lower, welding it back together, and adding a lot of lead to make the resulting form smooth. By this means, "chopping" made the roof lower; "sectioning" made the body thinner from top to bottom. "Channeling" was cutting notches in the floorpan where the body touches the frame to lower the whole body. Fins were often added from other cars, or made up from sheet steel. But in the custom car culture, if you were someone who merely changed the appearance without improving the performance substantially, you were looked down on.
Paint was an important concern. Once bodywork was done, the cars were painted unusual colors. Transparent but wildly-colored candy-apple paint, which was applied atop a metallic undercoat, and metalflake paint, which adds aluminum glitter within candy-apple paint, appeared in the 1960s. These took many coats to produce a brilliant effect -- which in hot climates had a tendency to flake off. Custom cars also continued the habit of adding decorative paint after the main coat was finished, of flames extending rearward from the front wheels, and of scallops and hand-painted pinstripes of a different color than the rest of the car. The latter, most often being of a single coat, would be expected to be of a simpler paint.
