Volvo S60 Concept

The Volvo S60 Concept is a design study that previews the production model scheduled for 2010 and gives indication of the future brand's formal language. The design features pronounced coupe-inspired lines and a futuristic interior
Debuting at the Detroit Motor Show in early January 2009, Volvo S60 Concept previews the production version of the all-new S60 which will be introduced in 2010.
The first-generation Volvo S60 was launched in 2000 and was profiled as a coupe with four doors. The car's sporty nature has made the S60 one of Volvo Cars' most global models.
The coupe-inspired lines of the original S60 are even more pronounced in t
he next generation.
The Volvo S60 Concept is powered by a four-cylinder 1.6-litre gasoline unit using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and producing 180 horsepower. Combined with a range of other technical measures it allows to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km (5.0 l/100 km).
From the official Press Release:
Exterior Design
The concept car gives a clear indication that the Volvo Cars design team is stepping up to the next level in the development of the products' DNA.
"The modern Scandinavian design of the S60 Concept reflects the "Do Not Abandon" approach to the strengths of the brand's design language.
"At the same time, it's a Dramatic New Approach. A refined balance of tradition and new, dynamic visual excitement," says Volvo Cars' design director Steve Mattin.
He adds: "The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring - there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future in the slightly longer perspective."
The front of the S60 Concept naturally sports the enlarged iron mark in the trapezoidal grille. The 3D Volvo letters in the iron mark are embedded in an illuminated panel. The grille itself has a somewhat new appearance with structured horizontal vanes adding refinement to its form.

Two DNA lamps flank the grill. They emphasise the vertical stance of the front and promote the bonnet's V-shape. The DNA lamps also become the starting points of the fresh sculptural design language of the bumpers.
The angled headlamps flow up into the strongly sculptured bonnet. Combined with the lower air intake's reverse trapezoidal shape, this gives the concept car a very expressive "face".
"Dynamic and with considerable character, but without appearing aggressive. This car is packed with inspiration from Scandinavian design and from the Swedish coastline's cliffs and seas. A thrilling blend of drama and sensuality," says Steve Mattin.
Viking longboats in the headlamps
The concept car's headlamps unite classic Scandinavian influences with modern high-tech.
In each of the headlamps, the lights form a sculpture creating the image of two miniature Viking longboats sailing side by side, one for main beam and one for dipped beam.
When driving in the dark, the light is reflected from the concealed, upward-facing High Performance LED bulbs, projected ahead by the ships' filled sails.
![]() ![]() |
A closer look reveals a number of specially designed details. The compact cooling system for the LED bulbs has protruding cooling blocks made out of aluminium, semi-visible under the ships' hulls.
![]() ![]() |
The design creates "the illusion of shimmering glass panels that float above a dark and mysterious Scandinavian sea". The semi-transparent housing incorporates a layered ring-like formation that is part of the position lights. "You can see the confident face of the concept car illuminating in a ring-like formation."
The transparent attachment of the door mirrors illuminates fully and becomes part of the indicator function. The panorama roof is another ingredient that contributes to the concept car's airy Scandinavian aura.
![]() ![]() |
"The unique livery in "Warm Liquid Copper" enhances the richness of the S60 Concept's body surfacing, adding a feeling of depth and exclusivity. The colour also links to Sweden's rich copper mining history," says Steve Mattin.
Viewed from the side, the concept car's slim coupe roofline and window graphics are accompanied by an entirely new lateral shoulder line, forming a gentle double wave. Stretching from the headlamps all the way to the tail, it adds emotional excitement and plays with the surface and its highlights.
The unique rear parallelogram doors offer a spectacular show whenever they are opened and shut.
Door opening is initiated by pressing on a button and the movement starts off in the traditional way. In the next phase, the forward section also swings out away from the car's body and the door glides parallel with the side of the car until it reaches its end position by the rear wheel.
Since the car does not have a B-pillar between the front and rear seats, this door configuration offers exceptionally generous entry and exit access.
Both the seven-spoke 20-inch wheels and the tread of the low-profile tyres have been specially designed. The bronze-painted brake callipers match the car's paintwork and accentuate the concept car's muscular, sporty looks.
Inspiration from the racing track
"In forthcoming models, you will see more and more of our "racetrack" design cues. The car's lines do not end abruptly but instead forge a continuous flowing pattern inspired by the fast sweeps of the racing track. In the concept car, this is particularly visible at the rear," says Steve Mattin.
The tail lamps, which follow the curve of the rear shoulders, are as advanced as the headlamps up front. When switched off, the lamp panels show no trace of the traditional red or yellow associated with rear lights.
But when activated, the position marker lights, brake lights and turn indicators come on in their correct colours with the help of LED bulbs.
The lighting system's solid glass panel is sectioned into horizontal "slices" that create the visual impression of a three-dimensional architect drawing when the lights come on.

At the rear there is also a retractable diffuser that adjusts with vehicle speed to give better aerodynamic properties.
Interior Design
With the interior of the Volvo S60 Concept, Volvo Cars' design director Steve Mattin and his team are displaying a variety of next-generation ideas.
"You could say that we are showing the road we would like to take in the future. This interior is without doubt the most exclusive we have ever created," says Steve Mattin.
When the parallelogram doors finish their high-tech display, they reveal an interior packed with exciting details, all of which together create a Scandinavian fresh light feeling, full of visual harmony.
In the middle of the four-seater car glitters the jewel in the crown: a floating centre stack crafted from handmade, solid Orrefors crystal.
"It resembles a waterfall that flows down from the instrument panel and then courses along the middle of the car's interior," says Steve Mattin.
![]() ![]() |
The entire driver's environment has been designed to provide total overview and control. The driver is backed up by logical instruments, easily accessible controls and sophisticated technology that monitors the surrounding traffic, ready to alert the driver in the event of danger.
![]() ![]() |
The combined instrument is similar in design to the unit in the Volvo XC60 Concept. It resembles a bumble-bee with a round speedometer as the "body" flanked by two digital "wings" providing all the other information.
"The speedometer is designed as a three-dimensional glass spiral. The low numbers appear closest to the eye and the figures appear to be increasingly distant as you accelerate. The idea is that the speedometer should provide a visual reminder of the force of the forward motion," explains Steve Mattin.
The combined instrument too has the centre stack's floating, almost weightless feel about it.
The instrument is built up in several layers. In the gaps between the layers concealed vents contribute to better airflow inside the cabin.
Here too there is a link to the exterior's "racetrack" theme in the form of the unbroken line around the instrument. A copper frame matches the concept car's paintwork.
Above the combined instrument, the driver receives information and alerts from the preventive safety systems via the windscreen's head-up display. Information from the car's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) is integrated in the A-pillars.

The three-spoke steering wheel has integrated multifunctional rotating controls. The open lightweight aluminium pedals echo the design language of the concept car's wheels.

Chrysler ecoVoyager Concept

The third eco-friendly concept Chrysler will be unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show in January will be this ecoVoyager show car, a four-door, four-passenger vehicle. Like the Ford Airstream concept unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show last year, this concept explores the potential of maximizing interior space through employing an electric powertrain mate
d to an environmentally-friendly hydrogen fuel-cell.Overall the exterior design of the ecoVoyager appears fairly conventional. At the front, stacked headlamps flank the familiar egg-crate grille while the sweeping character lines add an athletic look. The teardrop DLO is devoid of a B-pillar, adding an air of elegance to the profile, while the rear end pays homage to the Nassau showcar revealed by Chrysler at last year's Detroit Auto Show. The lower portion of the tapering back light is pulled rearward, a treatment echoed in the tapered bumper facia surfacing below the hatch opening, and the concept also features roof-mounted windows.
Measuring 4856mm long and 1915mm wide, the ecoVoyager is 159mm shorter and 35mm wider than the 300C but is 125mm taller, at 1600mm. Its 2946mm wheelbase is also 104mm shorter, but the one-box design is claimed to have a space advantage over conventional powertrain setups as its lithium-ion battery pack resides under the floor. The combination of these batteries and a small hydrogen fuel-cell is claimed to enable the vehicle to travel more than 300 miles while emitting zero emissions.

Dodge ZEO concept
The Dodge ZEO Concept is yet another design sketch Chrysler has released prior to the concept car's debut at the Detroit Auto Show. The sporty styling is a departure from previous electric vehicle designs, with aggress
ive design cues bearing some similarities to Honda's CR-Z concept revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.Claimed to embrace the bold, expressive look of the Dodge brand, the ZEO exhibits a new, 'youthful breed of muscle car for the 21st century' according to its maker. It has been built for driving enthusiasts, and as it features an electric-only propulsion system with a lithium-ion battery pack it is also another push from the brand toward environmentally sustainable concept vehicle.
At 4390mm long and 1743mm wide (at H-point), the ZEO is 1290mm high and has a wheelbase of 2792mm. Though it is essentially a compact car, Dodge is keen to point out that unlike other compact vehicles featuring electric power, the ZEO Concept is a four-door, four-passenger (2+2) sport wagon that delivers function as well as environmental responsibility. Dodge claims the ZEO concept will be capable of traveling at least 250 miles on a single charge.

Jeep Renegade Concept

Chrysler has revealed three sketches of new concepts it is scheduled to unveil at the Detroit Auto Show in January. One of these is the Jeep Renegade Concept, a sporty B-segment-sized two-seater the automaker clai
ms is ideally suited for the all-weather delights of off-roading and dune surfing. The design of the vehicle is a futuristic take on the existing open-topped Jeep Wrangler, featuring a cut-down speedster windshield, a roll bar, openings in the door lowers and a hose-out interior. Measuring 3885mm in length, 1598mm in width (at the H-point), 1431mm high and with a wheelbase of 2580mm, this compact "eco-friendly" vehicle was designed with minimal material usage. According to Chrysler it is 'designed for those who want to enjoy the earth while taking care of its future'.
Powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and a small-displacement BLUETEC diesel engine, the concept is claimed to travel up to 40 miles on battery power alone. But when mated to the diesel engine the hybrid powertrain is claimed to result in a fuel economy figure surpassing 110 miles per gallon.
Hyundai Concept Genesis Coupe
Korea's largest automaker is poised to unveil the Concept Genesis Coupe at the 2007 Los Angeles International Auto Show
next week. Though these sketches are admittedly exaggerated, the coupe uses the concept Genesis sedan, unveiled it the 2007 New York International Auto Show in April, as the basis for the structure. According to our sources, the sporting coupe concept hints at the forthcoming design direction for a future rear-wheel drive sports coupe from Hyundai called the BK, a luxurious sport coupe specifically for North American market. Contrary to popular belief, the BK coupe is not the replacement for the Tiburon/Tuscani but is positioned more upscale.
The sweeping, aggressive lines of the rendered images appear particularly radical and feature a Z-lined DLO around the waistline. Hopefully it will translate well onto the finished product, which we'll be seeing next week in LA. Stay tuned for our Los Angeles Auto Show Highlights coming soon.
Nissan Forum concept
Nissan has released a sketch of the Forum, a concept vehicle the firm will unveil at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Created at Nissan Design America, the Forum concept offers innovations such as trackless sliding doors and no B-pillars. It is said to 'explore the next generation of family transportation'.
While we're not exactly sure what that entails, it's probably safe to assume that the concept will feature some of the styling cues seen on the company's concept cars unveiled in Tokyo. We'll keep you updated in our Detroit Auto Show Highlights once we've seen it in the metal.
UPDATE: December 5 2007
An interior sketch, depicting the flowing instrument panel of the new Forum concept, has just been released by Nissan. The minivan's cabin, Nissan claims, will host an array of communications systems including an advanced Bose Media System with proximity sensor-based information controller and a one-button audio muting system. The technology laden interior will also feature monitoring cameras for the second and third rows, while individual seat-mounted speakers will be integrated into every row.

Toyota Crown Hybrid Concept
Toyota is touting technology with its new Crown Hybrid concept. Top of the list is the firm's latest hybrid system, VDIM (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management). The large car will of course include other features, which Toyota claims will result in an advanced fusion of driving, environmental and safety performance. According to the carmaker: 'the time has come to present the next-generation inspirational luxury sedan'. The Crown Hybrid concept is powered by a two-stage THS (Toyota Hybrid System) II motor speed reduction devic
e that helps achieve smooth acceleration, high fuel-efficiency, low CO2 and other exhaust emissions benefits and quietness. Other technological advancements include VDIM with active steering control, to achieve optimal balance among drive powe
r, steering and braking.
Inside, the Crown Hybrid adopts a TFT (thin film transistor) LCD "Finegraphic Meter" to provide the driver with a variety of information in an easier-to-see and easier-to-understand way. A total of 10 airbags are also on board for safety.
Toyota 1/X concept
Toyota will unveil its minimalistic 1/X (pronounced one-Xth) concept vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show next week. The concept is meant to redefine from its very roots the idea of what it means to be environmentally considerate. Among its technological attributes, the vehicle - with a design that aims to harmoniously coexist with people and society - weighs only "1/Xth" that of other vehicles in its
class. The concept, which adopts light but highly rigid carbon fiber reinforced plastic throughout the body frame, features narrow pillars for a better field of vision. Inside the skeletal structure the 1/X maintains an interior spac
e on par with that of the Prius, while its target fuel efficiency is double and its weight has been reduced to 420kg (about one third of the Prius' weight).
Its power unit - located beneath the rear seat for a midship, rear-wheel-drive system - combines fossil fuel consumption-reducing FFV (flexible fuel vehicle) technology and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a displacement of only 500cc. This allows charging from an external power source and a longer electric-motor cruising distance. The result of its lower weight and fuel conserving technology is a drastic decrease of CO2 and less air pollution.
